Believe it or not, National Grandparents Day — celebrated every year on the first Sunday in September after Labor Day on September 12, 2021 — was originally invented by a child.
Law! Little nine-year-old Russell Capper wrote to President Nixon asking for a special day to honor his beloved grandparents in 1969. Unfortunately, Capper received a response from President Nixon's secretary that they could not do so. Show sad face emoji.<
Fast forward a few years to 1978, and activist Marian McQuade launched an initiative called "Adopt a Grandparent," which eventually prompted President Jimmy Carter to establish National Grandparents Day as a holiday. Today, Marian McQuade is credited with founding National Grandparents Day, but I believe it is true that it was the grandson who originally requested it.
